EU to Implement Clearer Rules on Customs Handling of Pirated Goods

The following is from the 28 January 2013 edition of Journal of Commerce.

The Internal Market Committee members of the European Parliament have approved a deal with the European Council that gives customs officials at EU borders better tools and clearer rules to confiscate, store and destroy pirated or counterfeit goods.

The new regulation on Customs Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights aims to improve the effectiveness of customs controls to prevent illegal or dangers products from entering the EU, while establishing clear rules on detention and destruction procedures.

Once the deal is given a final endorsement, the regulation will apply to all member states beginning Jan. 1, 2014.
