US Asks WTO to Examine Argentina’s Import Rules

The following is from the 7 December 2012 edition of Journal of Commerce.

The U.S. has asked the World Trade Organization to establish a dispute settlement panel to examine Argentina’s import restrictions on all U.S. goods, according to United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

Argentina’s restrictions include the use of discretionary import licensing requirements that unfairly limit U.S. exports. The country also requires importers to agree to undertake trade balancing commitments, such as agreeing to export a certain value of Argentine goods, in exchange for authorization to import U.S. goods.

The European Union, Mexico and Japan have also requested the establishment of panels to examine Argentina’s import restrictions.
