The controversial law with which the government intends to protect domestic agricultural production is currently being implemented and as a result, the government has suspended 3,275 permits belonging to companies that were not complying with the requirements under the new law, such as "... having adequate storage warehouses for food, having a legal representative and having legal residence. "
Yuri Huerta, manager of the Panamanian Food Safety Authority (Aupsa), told Prensa.com that "... 'In the database of the organization 6,184 traders were registered and after the cull only 2,909 are left.'"
"... Food importers must comply with optimal sanitary conditions for the storage of products or else they will be fined. The penalties for failure to comply with import processes range from $500 up to one million dollars. "
