Russia seeks ways to soften import bans’ impact

Russia will allow imports from neighbouring Belarus and Kazakhstan of food processed from Western raw materials as Moscow seeks to damp down domestic food price rises triggered by its ban on food imports from the West.

On Aug. 7, Russia banned all meat, fish, dairy, fruit and vegetable imports from the United States, the European Union, Norway, Canada, and Australia for one year to retaliate against Western sanctions on Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.

China hopes WTO can 'resolve differences' and sign deal

China said on Monday it regretted World Trade Organisation members had failed to reach an agreement on simplifying global customs rules, a breakdown it said could damage multilateral trade.

India last month torpedoed a global deal to standardize and streamline customs regulations, known as "trade facilitation", after it demanded more freedom to subsidize and stockpile food grains than is allowed by WTO rules.

New customs law: expectations met?

The Law on Customs issued by the National Assembly in June and due to take effect on January 1, 2015 demonstrates the efforts of the government in reforming customs procedures. WTO Talks: India Hardens Stand on Food Subsidy

India could put a landmark World Trade Organization deal in jeopardy at hectic negotiations in Geneva after saying it would withhold support for the agreement unless there was simultaneous progress on resolving a dispute over its food security program.

India would like the WTO — which set itself a deadline of July 31 for the deal on the movement of goods across borders — to address its concerns over a cap on subsidies that could limit government stocks of grain that are part of its food program.
