Registration begins for public observation of appeal in "US-COOL" dispute

The following is excerpted from an 18 April 2012 news item by the World Trade Organization.

At the request of Canada and the United States, two of the participants in the disputes “United States – Certain Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) Requirements” (WT/DS384, WT/DS386), the Appellate Body Division has decided to open the oral hearing to public observation. The hearing will take place on 2 and 3 May 2012.

"Trade improves the lives of people" - Lamy

The following is from a 17 April 2012 speech by Pascal Lamy of the World Trade Organization.

Director-General Pascal Lamy, in a speech at the Minnesota Economic Club in Minneapolis, United States on 17 April 2012, said that “trade improves the lives of most people around the world”. He added that singer Bob Dylan’s words “the times they are a changing” still ring true today in world trade.

Trade growth to slow in 2012 after strong deceleration in 2011

The following is a 12 April 2012 news item from the World Trade Organization.

World trade expanded in 2011 by 5.0%, a sharp deceleration from the 2010 rebound of 13.8%, and growth will slow further still to 3.7% in 2012, WTO economists project. They attributed the slowdown to the global economy losing momentum due to a number of shocks, including the European sovereign debt crisis.
