New WTO publication underlines need to boost women's participation in trade

A new WTO book on trade and gender, published on 14 September, looks at ways of bolstering women’s participation in international trade and highlights how women’s economic empowerment can support trade growth and economic development. Launched at the WTO’s Public Forum, the book brings together the latest research on the role of trade policy in improving gender equality.

WTO issues 2023 Annual Report

The WTO has published its 2023 Annual Report, providing a comprehensive account of the organization’s activities in 2022 and the early part of 2023. The Report looks back at key events over the past year, such as the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12), and WTO work in addressing global challenges, including climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and food security.

WTO issues new edition of World Tariff Profiles

The WTO issued today (6 July) the 2023 edition of “World Tariff Profiles”, an annual publication providing comprehensive information on tariffs imposed on imports by over 170 countries and customs territories. The report — jointly prepared with the International Trade Centre and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) — also provides data on non-tariff measures, such as anti-dumping actions, countervailing duties and safeguard measures.

WTO: Members discuss cybersecurity, intangible digital products, raise over 60 trade concerns

At meetings of the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) on 19 to 23 June, WTO members discussed regulatory cooperation on cybersecurity and on intangible digital products. They also aired a total of 68 trade concerns, 10 of which were raised for the first time, regarding digital issues, public health concerns and product standards, among other topics. Members also shared their progress on improving regulatory transparency and on using the ePing platform to track information on product requirements.

Outcomes of the 2023 WCO Council Sessions: Election of a new WCO Secretary General and Chairperson of the WCO Council

Dear IFCBA members,

The WCO Policy Commission and Council met this week in Brussels. The results of elections for the Secretary General position and Chair of the Council, as well as the outcome of the Council’s deliberations, are found below. 

Watch for a separate update next week on the meeting of the Private Sector Consultative Group, including its dialogue with the WCO Policy Commission. The PSCG meeting was chaired by IFCBA representative Jaime King, with delegates Carol West (IFCBA Secretary) and Mary Jo Muoio (Director from the United States).

WTO: Members allow additional time for consideration of panel report in EU-India tariff dispute

WTO members agreed at a meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) on 15 June to a request from the European Union and India to grant the DSB additional time to consider the adoption of the panel ruling in “India — Tariff Treatment on Certain Goods in the Information and Communications Technology Sector” (DS582).
