UK: Investment in £8 million for broker training

Customs intermediaries and traders completing customs declarations can now apply for grants to support training and IT under a £8 million investment from government, as applications open today (4 December).

The government has engaged extensively with industry bodies and key providers of customs broker services – including freight forwarders, fast parcel operators and independent customs brokers – to better understand the challenges they face in supporting existing and new clients.

A global crackdown operation on solid waste smuggling shows that China is playing a leading role in international joint operations, and countries in Southeast Asia, like Vietnam and Thailand, have become the new victims in the illegal trade since China rolled out restrictions on solid waste imports. Officials from the UN and the World Customs Organization are calling on developed countries to work with developing countries more closely and adopt better policies and technologies to solve the world's recycling woes.

WTO's World Trade Outlook Indicator signals further loss of momentum in trade growth into Q4

Trade growth is likely to slow further into the fourth quarter of 2018 according to the WTO’s latest World Trade Outlook Indicator (WTOI) released on 26 November. The most recent WTOI reading of 98.6 is the lowest since October 2016 and reflects declines in all component indices. It is below the previous value of 100.3 and falls under the baseline value of 100 for the index, signalling that trade growth in the coming months is expected to be below-trend.

UPDATED STATISTICS on the Shanghai Free Trade Zone (FTZ)

The Shanghai Free Trade Zone (FTZ), with an area of 120 square km, generated 42.9 percent of the total import and export of the municipality in the first 10 months, local authorities said Sunday.

The data came days after the State Council, China's cabinet, released a raft of measures supporting pilot FTZs to deepen reform and innovation.
