Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) to License Customs Brokers Firms

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) through its Professional Responsibility Section has concluded a day dialogue with Customs Brokerage firms across the country.

The aimed of the meeting was to abreast existing and prospective clearing firms with the rules and requirements regarding the process of licensing Customs Broker Firms.

WCO to involve Uzbekistan in its activities

The General Secretary of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Kunio Mikuriya, arrived in Uzbekistan on an official visit, Trend reports via Uzbek media.

The main purpose of the Secretary General’s visit is to involve Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, in the WCO’s activities by participating in the Organization’s activities, assisting customs services in improving their capacity in simplifying customs and trade procedures, and strengthening regional cooperation.

Gerard O’Hare’s phoneline has been busy. As general manager of Beagan’s, the country’s largest independent customs broker, he and his staff have been taking up to 20 queries a day from callers concerned about Brexit.

“The state of unreadiness among people out there is just unbelievable,” says the customs man who has been in the business long enough to remember trucks waiting a day at the Irish Border for customs clearance.

Brexit: UK Customs checks to be simplified in no-deal situation

Lorries will be able to drive straight off ferries and Channel Tunnel trains without making customs declarations in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the government has announced.

New guidance for importers and hauliers says firms would file a simplified form online in advance and pay duty later.

Hauliers have warned that no-deal could result in long queues at Channel ports.

The industry said firms would still not be ready for a "chaotic" EU exit - even with these simplified procedures.

Two new landmark agreements between the EU and Japan come into effect on February 1, 2019: the Economic Partnership Agreement and the Strategic Partnership Agreement. The economic agreement is the largest bilateral trade deal ever made by the EU in terms of market size and will be the largest zone of free trade created in history.
