WTO: Registration opens for public hearing in "US-Countervailing Measures on Softwood Lumber from Canada"

Uganda to host 55 African Customs experts at Munyonyo

Uganda will host on September 16-20th Directors General and Commissioners of Customs from 55 African Union (AU) member countries.

The tax leaders will include technocrats from international bodies such as World Customs Organization, UNCTAD, IGAD and various diplomats.

This conference will hold discussions on matters of customs and action points from last year’s 10th meeting held in Moroni Comoros that ended with a Moroni Declaration on Combating Corruption in Customs and the adoption of the AU Draft Trade Facilitation Strategy.

Illicit cross-border trafficking in cultural property - OSCE Asian partners meet in Mongolia

A five-day awareness raising workshop on combating illicit cross-border trafficking in cultural property concluded on August 30 in Ulaanbaatar, the OSCE reported.

More than 40 participants from the OSCE Asian Partners for Cooperation Mongolia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand took part in the event. They represented police, border and customs services, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports as well as other entities such as anti-corruption agencies and academia.

WTO's Goods Trade Barometer suggests further weakening of goods trade into third quarter

The growth of world merchandise trade volumes is likely to remain weak in the third quarter of 2019 according to the WTO’s Goods Trade Barometer, released on 15 August. The latest reading of 95.7 from the barometer, formerly the World Trade Outlook Indicator (WTOI), is lower than the previous release and signals that stronger trade growth is not yet in sight.

US CBP to release proposed rule that would require Customs Brokers to verify Importer IDs

Customs and Border Protection is publishing a proposed rule to require customs brokers to collect certain information from importers to enable the brokers to verify the identity of importers, including nonresident importers, CBP said.

Only a limited amount of information currently is required for customs brokers to receive power of attorney (POA), according to CBP.
